What is Huchuy Picchu? Where is it? What if we told you that there’s a hidden gem surrounding the world-renowned Machu Picchu? That’s right! We’re talking about Huchuy Picchu mountain, the smallest of the three mountains surrounding the iconic Inca site (Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountain). This mountain may not be as famous as its neighbors, Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain, but it’s quickly becoming one of the most photographed peaks of the last years.

Join Koa as we take you on a journey to explore this magnificent mountain.

What is Huchuy Picchu?

Huchuy Picchu mountain is the newest route inside the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. The other two extra routes inside Machu Picchu are Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountain, both are already famous, so the Huchuy Picchu trail came as an alternative to complement the visit to Machu Picchu.

Huchuy Picchu mountain

When discussing the etymology of Huchuy Picchu’s name, it’s important to note that the name originates from the Quechua language, one of the native languages of the Incas. However, it’s worth mentioning that Huchuy Picchu is a contemporary name that means “small mountain.”

This name was likely given in reference to the mountain’s size in comparison to its neighboring peaks, which include Machu Picchu mountain and Huchuy Picchu’s larger counterpart, Huayna Picchu. The imposing Huayna Picchu mountain, the one seen in the background of the classic photos of Machu Picchu, usually attracts more attention compared to the smaller mountain when one looks at the beautiful photos of Machu Picchu.

Where is Huchuy Picchu?

Huchuy Picchu Mountain is located inside the impressive Machu Picchu, on the north side of the Inca Citadel. It is a hidden gem that only a few adventurers have discovered in recent years. From its summit, you can get a breathtaking and unique view of the emblematic archaeological complex wonder of the world: Machu Picchu.

Huchuy Picchu is a small mountain, which usually goes unnoticed by most visitors. However, it is a mountain that deserves attention, as it offers an extraordinary opportunity to experience the magic of Machu Picchu from its small summit.

When you look at the classic photos of Machu Picchu, you will notice a small mountain in the backdrop. It is none other than Huchuy Picchu. It is often overshadowed by its imposing neighbor, Huayna Picchu Mountain, which features prominently in panoramic photos of Machu Picchu. However, Huchuy Picchu is a fantastic alternative for those who want to avoid crowds while still enjoying the magnificent views that Machu Picchu has to offer.

What is the altitude of Huchuy Picchu?

Have you wondered what the altitude of Huchuy Picchu is? The summit of this mountain reaches an impressive 2498 meters, or 8195 feet, above sea level. Interestingly, this is only about 68 meters higher than Machu Picchu, making it a relatively small peak in comparison.

Like Huayna Picchu, Huchuy Picchu features stone steps and several Inca structures, including a double jamb door that highlights the religious significance of the site. It’s clear that this mountain held great importance for the Incas and remains a fascinating site for visitors to explore today.

How to arrive at the “Little Mountain” inside Machu Picchu?

To access the mountain, when you buy your entrance ticket to Machu Picchu by your own or with a travel agency,  you must purchase the “Circuito 4 + Huchuy Picchu mountain” ticket on the official website of Machu Picchu entrance tickets. It’s not uncommon to see llamas wandering through the ancient city of Machu Picchu, adding to the authentic and historical feel of the place.

Huchuy Picchu vs Huayna Picchu vs Machu Picchu mountain

  • The Andean peaks of Machu Picchu mountain and Huayna Picchu loom large over the surrounding landscape. Machu Picchu mountain is towering nearly 1,300 feet (400 meters) above Huayna Picchu.
  • Machu Picchu Mountain is the highest peak in the Machu Picchu citadel.
  • The ascent to Huayna Picchu may be slightly shorter than that of Machu Picchu Mountain, but the steepness of the climb makes it an arduous journey. On the other hand, while the climb to Machu Picchu mountain may be longer, it is also less demanding, giving hikers a more leisurely experience.
  • As you make your way up either peak, the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys are simply awe-inspiring. For those who suffer from vertigo, the best viewpoints are Machu Picchu mountain and Huchuy Picchu, which offer unobstructed views of the valley below.
  • Despite its steeper climb, Huayna Picchu is a popular destination for adventurers seeking a thrilling hiking experience. As you ascend, the angles of inclination become more extreme, challenging even the most experienced hikers. But once you reach the top, the exhilaration of standing at the peak of one of the world’s most iconic mountains is simply indescribable.
  • If you’re interested in history, Huayna Picchu has more archaeological units than Machu Picchu Mountain, allowing visitors to explore the fascinating ruins and learn about the ancient Incan civilization. On the other hand, Machu Picchu mountain is known for its abundant flora and fauna, which are typical of the Andean ecosystem.
  • And finally, for the intrepid traveler looking for something off the beaten path, Huchuy Picchu is a hidden gem that has yet to gain widespread attention. Rising to an altitude of 223 feet (68 meters) above Machu Picchu, this mountain offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape that is just as impressive as its more famous neighbors.
  • Huchuy Picchu is the easiest summit to conquer, with just a half-hour hike to the top.
